Very promising show

Based on this pilot episode, STARGIRL might already be a keeper! I can't exactly explain why, but from the promos, I was low-key interested in this series and I vowed not to invest in another CW series again after Flash and Riverdale went to hell. Then again, those 2 series had great Seasons 1 and 2 only to go to crap for various reasons. So that means Stargirl is good for 2 years at least.

Even though Luke Wilson is well known, I've only seen him in 2 things: That 70s Show and Vacancy and I liked him in both. It's probably better this way because if I'd have seen him in more stuff, the overexposure would have probably been a negative for me, so in a way, it's like I'm watching a new actor and from the Pilot, Wilson really looks like he's going to be the glue that keeps this show together.

Wilson plays Pat Dugan, the dependable sidekick to Starman (Joel McHale in a funny cameo performance), who dies in the opening flashback sequence. Flash-forward 10 years to the present and we meet Pat's family: his wife Barbara Whitmore (well played by Amy Smart), his son Mike Dugan (scene-stealing child actor Trae Romano) and last but certainly not least his stepdaughter Courtney Whitmore (winning and engaging performance by Brec Bassinger), who plays the title character.

The fractured family moves from LA to Blue Valley, Nebraska, where Courtney runs into problems while the rest of the family acclimates almost immediately. The show sets up Courtney's potential group of sidekicks, friends, enemies, and frenemies at her school, where she meets a trio of "losers" and ends up getting into an altercation with the school bully. Later that night at home, she stumbles upon her father's staff in the family basement and Stargirl is more or less born.

The series premiere throws in a ton of exposition and characters, yet still manages to be very entertaining. The dialogue was simple, crisp and funny. The characterizations well laid out. Also, the CGI is very impressive, unlike another CW superhero series that I've already mentioned. Bassinger and Wilson have a natural rapport and play extremely well off each other. They were pretty much the only ones given anything to work with in the Pilot and both brought their A games. Thankfully, they'll be leading the show moving forward. I'm already dreading this show's eventual fusion with the rest of the Arrowverse in later seasons, but at this point, I'm all in on being a regular viewer of Stargirl!
