Review of Koi

Koi (2019)
10/10
A lesson in impact and sensitivity
3 June 2020
Even if, for some reason, you were to be left indifferent by the stories of these humans connected to the tragedy that struck the Tohoku region of Japan in 2011, you should still watch this.

Koi is a perfect example of how a churning, delicate subject can be documented without leaving any perspective out or becoming a horror-fest. Perhaps due to cultural bias, the Great Tohoku Earthquake has received a very strange treatment from media: most have made it past history, even if some children that witnessed the event haven't yet completed mandatory education. Koi is a gorgeous stride in the other direction, putting live recounting, coping with loss and criticism at the center of the movie. On top of that, dazzling use of the camera, and magnificent OST.
