Season Three Review
10 July 2020
I think the third season of "Preacher" was an improvement over the second, without quite ever matching the first. Again there's a change of focus, and I liked this story better.

Jessie (Dominic Cooper) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) race Tulip's (Ruth Negga) dead body to Angelville, Jessie family home and a former plantation. Jessie's Gran'ma (Betty Buckley) has the ability to bring people back from the dead, but each miracle comes at a high price and her two enforcers, TC (Colin Cunningham) and Jody (Jeremy Childs) are eager to collect. Though initially thwarted, the Grail haven't given up on Jessie as the new Messiah, but more powerful leaders than Herr Starr (Pip Torrens) have taken an interest in him.

So again. Tonally, great. Mixing elements of the Cajun soul magic that was touched upon in Season two, with the existing vampires and religious elements. Dark, violent, gory - all remain about on par with what the previous seasons have been. It almost fixed one of the elements that I didn't like from the last season, I felt that run split up our three protagonists more than I wanted it too. This time Jessie and Tulip are together most of the time - but Cassidy is given an entirely separate story to deal with - until pulling them back together at the end. Overall, I did prefer the story to this third season though, even if it was mostly people teaming up, double crossing each other and then teaming up again, for all 10 episodes. I liked the new characters, including Colin Cunningham as TC who I remember from his memorable turn in "Blood Drive", TC is similarly depraved character but with more of a heart. I also preferred limiting Hitler and Eugene to a minimum and only introducing them when they could affect the main plot.

Still not quite top tier TV, but good stuff.
