Review of The Chef

The Chef (2012)
8/10
A simple delight

"Comme un chef" is a comedy, as luscious as a millefeuille and deliciously airy as a lemon sorbet. With a plot surprisingly alike Pixar's Ratatouille, it's about Jacky, an aspiring cook trying to impress the celebrity chef Alexandre Lagarde, played by Jean Reno, who proves that his range encompasses comedy as well. It's not a very demanding entertainment, and Jacky gets his happy ending, both with his fiance and his boss, but movies like these are feel-good stories laced by culinary delights which enhance their appeal, like Lasse Hallström's Chocolat. French cuisine is famous for its whimsy as it is already, and though Comme un chef doesn't really live up to the level of Big Night, it's a time well spent.
