Adequate movie, but lacking the entertainment worth of the first movie...
21 July 2020
I sat down to watch the 2014 Thai horror comedy "Make Me Shudder 2" (aka "Mathayom pak ma tha Mae Nak") after having seen the 2013 first movie and actually enjoying that quite a bit.

Well, while "Make Me Shudder 2" was based on the Thai tale of Mae Nak, this movie just failed to cut it; it simply didn't have what was needed to live up to the first movie.

The comedy in the movie felt too forced and it was right there in your face throughout most of the movie, so the horror aspect of this sequel took a step back in lieu of the comedy being the focal point. That was a shame, in my opinion, especially since director Poj Arnon just didn't manage to deliver properly. The comedy was just taking up too much of the screen time.

Now, I enjoy the tale of Mae Nak, and there are some pretty nice Thai horror movies that delve into the tale quite nicely. So I must admit that I was thrilled when I learned that "Make Me Shudder 2" was going to be set around that tale. Just a shame that the movie failed to be impressive.

It was nice to see the cast return to the sequel, however, to reprise the quirky characters from the first movie.

All in all, then "Make Me Shudder 2" was watchable, for sure, but it wasn't up to the level of the first movie. I am rating it a less than mediocre four out of ten stars.
