The Other Mother

This French series is set in Le Havre; a child psychologist is called in when a three and a half year old boy, Malone, claims that his parents aren't his real parents. Believing the child he contacts Captain Marianne Aubrais, a detective in the local police. She is busy with a serious case involving a robbery which left one officer and two thieves, dead and another two criminals being looked for. She agrees to look into the psychologist's claims as he believes Malone will soon lose his memories of his real mother.

I enjoyed this series; it started with an intriguing idea and developed it nicely. Inevitably there were some clichés but others were nicely avoided in ways I didn't expect. The characters were interesting and mostly sympathetic... the villain however was suitably villainous. The cast was solid; most notably Anne Charrier, who was great as Marianne; Pascal Elbé, as her friend and colleague Papy; and Emmanuel Bonami as the villain Zerda. Young Tom d'Ornano really impressed as Malone. Local settings were nicely incorporated into the story as Malone talks of seeing a castle and a wrecked pirate ship which turn out to be landmarks adapted for a child's imagination. At just six episodes the series doesn't drag on, neither does it feel rushed. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to anybody who enjoys crime dramas and is looking for something a little different.
