Night Flight (1933)

A waste of talent
8 September 2020
A fantastic cast (J. Barrymore, L. Barrymore, Gable, Hayes, Loy, Montgomery), but unfortunately they're trapped in a script lacking any sort of imagination. The characters are cartoonish and the story uninteresting, despite the drama of these pilots risking their lives in flights all over South America "just so a fella can get a postcard on Tuesday instead of Thursday" as one cynically puts it (child with polio awaiting serum notwithstanding). There are some moments of nice camera work and the playing of light and shadow, some decent stock footage of planes flying through mountains, and cheesy special effects, but it wasn't enough to hold my interest even over just 84 minutes. If felt like all of this great talent was just going through the motions, which is unfortunate.
