I mostly enjoyed Ratched's pilot but I also found it was a little too caught up with ticking Ryan Murphy's stylistic boxes to really reach the heights it should have. This episode is far more consistent and feels a lot more like you'd expect a prequel to the source material to feel. The writing while not perfect is tighter and more deliberate and the performances are once again fantastic, particularly Sarah Paulson. I will say though that this episode does fall into the typical homo erotic under/overtones that Ryan Murphy loves to use in all of his shows, although it's not much of a complaint as it is decently effective here due to the period. Cinematography and costuming is wonderful but why so much green?! I'm not sure there's a shot without it! As the credits rolled though I did think to myself that this instalment was a step in the right direction and that I was looking forward to seeing what was to come. 'Ice Pick' gets an 8/10 - P.S I LOVE the intro credits, just had to fit that in there.
