More irreverent wackiness with a less logical plot
30 September 2020
I wasn't that big a fan of the original Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, so I had no hope for this sequel. This time around the food created by Flint's machine has magically evolved and is alive. This makes for some silly puns when the food looks and acts like certain animals, but there aren't many jokes beyond that. Much like the first movie in this franchise, it seems like the primary source of comedy is just randomness. These people act goofy, isn't that hilarious!?! I didn't find myself even cracking a smile most of the time. The real-world implications of this film are also confusing as can be. I mean, if fruits and vegetables are now alive too, what will a vegan be able to eat?! And can the world handle this burst in population from food animals? It's stuff like this that I spend my time thinking about when the film-makers expect me to be laughing. I know it's a silly cartoon, but I can't help noticing the whole thing is horribly thought out.

The plot in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is not even slightly imaginative or original. I always get frustrated with these movies where a character idolizes a childhood hero and fails to recognize that person is evil until it's too late. I don't think I ever had anyone that I thought was so amazing in my youth that, even as an adult, I would assume everything they are doing is good and altruistic. The way it requires the protagonist to turn a blind eye to all the obvious signs just makes the hero seem stupid, which isn't a great move to get us on his side. The truly odd thing about the transition made in this movie is that the original film was all about Flint making a machine to provide food for people to eat. Yet in this film suddenly the villainous plot is that he wants to turn the food made by Flint's machine into something people can eat. So now eating food is bad?? It is convoluted, ridiculous, and even if you can forgive the insane "logic" of the plot, it's completely predictable. I wonder if even young kids will be interested in this movie for anything more than the cute food animals.
