For whatever reason I was one of the considerable number of "Civil War buffs" as a kid in the late 1950's. There were very few CW themed movies or TV shows (The Gray Ghost, Raintree County, The Red Badge of Courage, Birth of a Nation, etc.) so seeing this on Playhouse 90 was a real thrill at the time. The main thing I remember now indeed was the "lack of ladders" portrayed in show, and also as I recall it being shown where the officer Ledlie was drunk in his bunker. One of the officers, could have been Richard Boone, stuck a bayoneted rifle into the side of the trench so help soldiers get out and on their way.
