Warning: Spoilers
Autumn Bailey is a transfer student at Brookview High School, following the relocation of her single mom, Cynthia. Autumn decides to try out for the cheerleading squad with the express purpose of writing a series of muckraking articles about the toxic culture among the cheerleaders and their authoritarian coach. One thing leads to another, and a murder is committed. Autumn's articles unfortunately served more harm than good.

Autumn does not win the admiration of the audience when she lies to her mother when asked if she was the author of the articles. A pattern of deceit runs throughout the film among a very unsavory set of characters.

On the surface, the nastiest of the cheerleaders would appear to be Jenny, who gets demoted as captain. When Heidi, her successor, is subsequently killed, Jenny seems only one of almost any suspects that include the formidable coach Dot, Autumn's erstwhile boyfriend Jordan, Jenny's boyfriend Bode, or even Autumn's two colleagues on the school newspaper, Kara and Max.

An inherent problem with the film is that we really don't care about the characters. The most selfless was Autumn's mother, who sought and failed to build a relationship of trust with her daughter. The motto of the Brookview cheerleading team was, "We don't tolerate duds." The sad fact is apparent that through all of the calamity, Autumn decides to return to the cheerleading team. Perhaps she is the biggest dud of them all!
