The characters are designed to be trustable to Americans of all ethnic origin and they speak assuredly and without hesitation, which would be highly believable if you were not equipped with knowledge that allowed you to see through their mumbo-jumbo It is a bit like an imaginary disease. The spread of the fear and lies is what does the damage, rather than any spread of virus or germs, behaviour is changed already.
