Warning: Spoilers
A woman washes up on the beach and this leads to Mannix investigating the lawyer who had his license pulled for six months. Joe is sure the man is guilty of one murder and, later, of another murder plus an attempted murder. Joe turns out to be smarter than police labs, investigators, and all the evidence compiled by by both. Lloyd Bochner, slick as always, is good at playing the polished but slimy character and he does well here. Nancy Kovacks is simply beautiful and quite fine as the wife of victim #2. Gail Fisher is still making it happen as Peggy. Joe wears an apache tie in the first couple of scenes. Not good. Stick with the classic suit and tie look rather than passing fashions suited for younger people. Robert Reed's first appearance as Joe's police contact. Like the Larry Linville police character, Reed is a sergeant in this first show but a lieutenant in all other shows. Apparently, the police dept has a policy of 'one case with Joe' and 'up you go' on the promotion ladder. The show is weak because Joe goes with his gut and makes a big deal out of it and turns out to be right. Reminds me of the first season and his hatred of computers. Nobody likes a know-it-all who isn't smart enough to stay with Nancy Kovacks.
