Power Rangers Shifts Into Subpar Stories And Controversial Cast Changes
15 January 2021
The third series of the Power Rangers franchise (and the fifth season overall), Power Rangers Turbo is seen by the fan base as one of the worst. Set after the events of Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, the evil Divatox is back, and along with Elgar, Rynox, and new villain Porto, she returns to Earth to get revenge on the Power Rangers for ruining her plans to marry Maligore so she can the universe by his side.

In the three-part premiere, Zordon and Alpha 5 leave for Eltar, and the rangers get new help from Alpha 6, who talks in a New York accent and has a different catchphase, and Dimetria, a wise woman from the planet Inquiris, who at the start, answers the Rangers' questions with more questions (and Divatox's sister, as some believe), but as the series goes on, she does become more of the traditional mentor. While I like Alpha 6 for having more of an attitude, Dimitria I never liked at first, as she always spoke in questions, but in the second half, she would stop it and act more like a traditional mentor, redeeming her somewhat.

Being set after Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, Justin returns to be Rocky's replacement (as Steve Cardenas, who played the character, decided to leave the show, with some saying he wanted to focus on his martial arts career). In the second half, all but Justin get replaced in what is called the worst episode ever. There were many rumors as to why this happened, with some sources claiming it was because of a change in creative staff, while others claim it was because the Screen Actors Guild approached the actors to try and get them to join the guild, meaning Saban would have to pay them more money. Regardless of the reason, it would start the second half, which would fix the problems of the first.

The series is mediocre at best. The series did have episodes with good morals (one episode, Built For Speed, had the Rangers stop two teens drag racing), but sadly, there are episodes that serve as nothing more than comedic filler (like Trouble By The Slice, an episode infamous for having Divatox working in a pizza place, and making a monster that tried to bake the rangers into a giant pizza). Adapted from Gekisou Sentai Carranger, a season that was more lighthearted to the point where it was considered as Super Sentai making a "parody" of itself, Turbo did a so-so job adapting it into Power Rangers lore (especially with the action).
