Lockes Quest
17 January 2021
Halo Nightfall was released in 2014 as a short run web series that was released in five separate parts with each episode lasting around twenty minutes. Halo Nightfall was then released onto DVD and Blu Ray and was the second and last live action Halo movie to be released. The previous live action Halo movie (Halo 4 Forward Unto Dawn) (2012) was arguably one of the worst live action video game movies ever made. Halo Nightfall was intended as a stand alone origin movie for a new playable character named John Locke who would be one of the main characters in the then upcoming (Halo 5 Guardians) video game. The John Locke character proved to be unpopular with Halo fans in both Halo Nightfall and the (Halo 5 Guardians) video game. The Halo video game series hasn't had a new entry in the series since Halo 5 in 2015.

Halo Nightfall tells the origin story of John Locke who along with his squad of highly trained Oni soldiers and a group of UNSC soldiers from a backwater planet are tasked with nuking a stray peice of the Delta Halo ring. The stray peice of Delta Halo is home to a previously unknown mineral that in the hands of the Covenant can be used as a deadly biological weapon against humankind. John Locke and his team are sent to the stray peice of Delta Halo to apprehend a group of smugglers who are responsible for mining the mineral and selling it to the Covenant. Things don't go as planned upon arrival and the sqaud end up stranded on Delta Halo which is only hours away from the sun of a giant super nova which will destroy anything on the scorched surface of the Delta Halo ring. The sqaud are also pursued by Hunter Worms that consume all technology and life they find leaving them defenceless with only one option remaining to detonate the nuke and destroy Delta Halo along with them.

The storyline just doesn't feel like it belongs in the Halo universe it's more of a science fiction survival movie than it is a Halo storyline. The Covenant only make one appearance throughout the entire movie and even that is short lived. The movie contains no Masterchief or any other Spartans. The movie mentions the name Masterchief a couple of times but that's all. The costumes and special effects are laughably bad especially when you consider this movie had a budget of over ten million.

The acting from all involved is sub par at best I have honestly seen better acting and line reading from actor's in low budget science fiction B movies. The script is poorly written with an overabundance of cheesy philosophical speeches from one of the side characters about life as a soldier and sacrifice in the line of duty which feels so out of place in universe where the main character of the series Masterchief has cheated death more times than James Bond.

Seriously don't waste your time and money on this movie it's one of the worst video game adaptations ever made even the Mario Bros movie is better than this.
