A bit of a dud
25 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
CHU LIU HSIANG AND HU TIEH HUA is a Taiwanese martial arts epic with magic touches. It feels a little like ZU WARRIORS FROM MAGIC MOUNTAIN in terms of plotting although in look and execution it's more like a cheap Shaw Brothers knock off, like Taiwan made many of. The story is about a couple of buddies travelling through a dangerous landscape and tangling with various enemies along the way, from witches to stone goddesses and mysterious monks. It's only available in very poor quality form these days, and although some of the staging is elaborate - such as an ENTER THE DRAGON-style hall of mirrors at the climax - overall it's a bit of a dud.
