Review of American Skin

American Skin (2019)
7/10
powerful drama with an important message

There is much excellence in this film. The actors do a great job making the characters real, so that you can often feel their feelings. We see some of the thoughts and feelings of police officers with varied perspectives and of black men who are victims of bad police training, racial profiling, and harassment. I have read a fair amount about systemic racism, but intellectual analyses and statistics don't have the impact that this movie has.

The film is about white people, black people, rich people, working class people, a small number of Hispanic people, and the ways they all interact around police work and the judicial system in America. At times it is a little too clear that the film was made to teach us about those topics, but most of the time it is easy to get caught up in the story and the characters.

People who should go out of their way to watch this film include white people who care about understanding and dismantling systemic racism. Reviews from racist skeptics suggest that there is little to be gained by showing the movie to people who do not want to see what is true.

The budget for the film was tiny, and there are a few flaws that show that, but the overall quality of the film is excellent. It is powerful drama with an important message.
