I doubt that anyone that didn't witness it firsthand can really imagine what a huge social phenomenon television was in it's early days. Having a TV,any TV at all was a BIG deal! If you had a color TV,you could accidentally become a neighborhood celebrity! Think about that a minute.
The wife of Joe McDoakes buys a TV and next thing you know, the whole neighborhood is using the McDoakes' living room as a 'community TV room'!
The uninvited guests start requesting refreshments and Joe quite wisely claims that the fridge and cupboards are bare. His wife doesn't catch the hint but instead she corrects Joe and announces that there is a fridge full of beer and a bunch of snacks! Obviously this is not a sustainable situation, eventually something has to give, right? Interesting and rarely-seen view of the bad side of being "The first kid on your block..."
