Tank Girl (1995)
5/10
Meh.

Well, i saw a video recommending some obscure movies of the 80's-90's, all was well until i reached this one on the list.

Its weird to say the least. Im not entirely sure how to tackle it. Probably ill talk about the target audience first. I dont know who they were, and probably the director/writers werent sure either. You will see some dumb down scenarios where it does look like it was aimed to kids. But there are very adult oriented themes in there too in those same scenes. So definitely not for kids, and its quite boring for adults. Maybe for people in their late teens early 20's who enjoyed the punk world.

Now, you should understand that the movie is a satire, of what i still dont know. I dont know if its a satire of a serious movie, or a satire of a comedy. In any case, you will see for instance "goons" firing at tank girl, being "serious" at it, while she is both returning fire and cooking a hot dog at the same time she is laughing with no cover. (its a good scene though, but weird)

Tank girl is the main heroine, she is like if 90's Gwen Steffani and Pee-Wee had a child. You will see her being rebel and care free at dire situations, while laughing like Pee wee all the time.

The plot, while overall is a good setting, good dystopian world in the big picture, the details came out of the mind of a 10 year old.

The main villain also came out of a cartoon. Oh, and there are kangaroo/ or who knows what are they are kind of humanoid mutants that are quite horny but dont exactly are explained in detail nor actually need to be in the plot.

There are some good bits, like the animation and the overall world they created, they are not really believable, but the movie was never meant to be a serious one. Good sets, art, music was allright.

I wouldnt say it was bad acting in the movie. I actually would say that it is a very professional movie and the people involved there, except the writing. The actors just did what they could with what they had. Its just that while the pacing was ok, the plot is all over the place, some scenes are unnecessary, dont make sense or both.

The movie aimed high, and it would have done it with an actual script.

So in essence, this is a mindless flick, just like in the 80's, it is rebel, its irreverent, its funny (sometimes), but it has bad plot, it makes no sense, it tried to cover so much genres at the same time, it tried to cover all possible audiences, and it failed at everything.

Forgetabbe. Wont say to skip it, because there are a couple of decent bits, but you wont miss anything really. And you are not its target audience anyways, so its not the hidden jewel many people talk about. Its just a failed attempt to create a new genre.
