9/10
The most depressing movie of all time.

Warning: Spoilers
A story of 2 children trying to survive in Japan during the end of WWII.

In the first few minutes of the movie, it is apparent that the main characters of this story don't make it until the end. After that, it is an hour and a half of watching a brother and a sister try to survive despite being alone and hungry in a war-torn country.

Both major characters are loveable and well written. The dynamic of a caring older brother and a frisky sister works excellently. The theme and setting of WWII Japan are nothing new, however, the focus on the children gives it a breath of fresh air and presents the viewer with an emotional narrative that is sure to make the most hard-hearted people cry. Animation and art style could seem bleak and uninspired, but are incredibly suited for the film's theme and set the tone of this movie really well.

The only negative I can see some people having is the slow pace at which the movie unfolds. Some people could also bring up the argument of this movie being an hour and a half of waiting for the horrible fate of these children, just so it could feel depressing and sad. However, I would argue that there is enough substance for a movie this length.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of my favorite movies that I wouldn't want to watch again.
