Nice dress, but poor in substance

Mentioning studio ghibli has become an advertising trick, but honestly, the only two things that can remember the Japanese studio are: the scroung crabs and the naturalistic element. For the rest, the film has a strong European identity.

The problem with the film, besides its slowness, is that it wants to be authorial at all costs; from the soundtrack, to the hallucinations out of context, up to the lack of dubbing, it also lacks a real plot, which can be summarized in short as "The cycle of life". Do you have any curiosity about man's past, about the magical element, about the turtle's initial persistence, or about how he has practical knowledge despite the lack of experience and tools? Well, the director will not explain anything to you.

It remains a curated product, but it doesn't have much to say, despite efforts.
