This film was without a doubt an interesting contribution to the Dutch film history. Finally, after many years, a bit feature film is released about the subject of the Indonesian Independence War. The subject is controversial and needed to be brought to light. The movie did a great job in addressing the subject for a larger public.
How is the film itself? Honestly, the acting is really great in general. I especially love the main characters. Except for De Turk, in my opinion, he was cast a bit weirdly with an acting style that was played 'too soft' for his character. The cinematography was excellent and needs to be praised for that. The sound mixing and editing was very well done.
The plot itself was interesting. I like the overall plot of the film and I think the first part as well as the second part of the film were good. However, the character development wasn't perfect and clear, which caused the second part to be a bit weird. The question why De Vries changes his mind isn't answered. Why does he and not the rest? Also, it isn't really clear why the Turk suddenly losses his depth of character and starts to kill of people. I mean, yeah it's clear a bit, but there misses a lot of character development that could have made the film way way better.
All in all, a must-see diamond of Dutch film history.
