"I Give This Day, In Every Way, Myself To Satan's Duty!"...
28 June 2021
HOUSE OF THE BLACK DEATH stars John Carradine as Andre Desard, and Lon Chaney Jr. As his brother, Belial. At first glance this sounds fantastic. Two horror legends together in one movie!

Not so fast buckaroo!

It's fairly late in both of their careers at this point, so, the two spend most of the time somnambulating, and trying not to bump into things.

Much satanic ballyhoo and mumbo jumbo is blathered, while they wear cool, hooded robes. As an added bonus, apparently, bikini-clad dancers are big among the devil worshipping set.

Meanwhile, there's a werewolf running around killing sheep, dogs, and anything else it can get its claws on. There's also Dr. Mallory (Andrea King), who's in this movie for no discernable reason. Oh, and we can't forget Sabrina, Satan's belly dancer. As it turns out, she's the only aspect about this wretched mess worth watching! Alas, her part is far too brief.

ASTONISHING FACTS: #1- Three (3!) directors worked on this toilet boat! One of whom was the notorious, sub-sludge schlock Meister, Jerry Warren! #2- Both Carradine and Chaney Jr survived the making of this movie, going on to be in several more productions, though their glory days were certainly left behind!

If unending, gaseous "dialogue" and stunned-by-a-blunt-instrument "acting" are your cup of Hemlock, then, prepare to drown!...
