The sins of the mothers...
2 July 2021
... just keep on going. Ellen Burstyn plays Bonnie's mother, who abandoned her years ago and left her in a series of foster homes, causing Bonny to grow up feeling unloveable. Diagnosed with a fatal heart condition, Bonnie's mom wants to reunite with her and at least tell her she was sorry.

Bonnie is not amenable to forgiving or forming some kind of relationship, and I wonder why she is so mad. She messed up her daughter Christy's life as badly by being there as Bonnie's mom messed her up mentally by not being there. Bonnie's mom mentions she was an abused child herself, and never really explains that, so the problems go back even further in this family.

So none of the women in this family can manage to stay in school, not get pregnant as a teenager, and thus they wrestle with poverty and bad jobs and sometimes - in the case of Bonnie and Christy - addiction their whole lives.

If this episode drives home anything it is what the rest of the series does over multiple episodes - If women want to live happy adult lives they need to stay in school, not have children until they are done with their entire education, and stay away from substance abuse. Otherwise you will end up like all of the women in this series - attached to and even having the children of undependable men at a young age when you don't have the skills to do anything about it. I can get on this high horse because I don't suffer from dizziness and I am a woman myself.
