The man doesn't want Arthur to mention his name in public, but he and Arthur are old friends. Arthur and Ray offer condolences to Charlie Johnson's widow. She invites them back to her house for food and drink. The guests are tailed by undercover police.

Arthur and Tommy are drunk. Arthur send Ray home. Ray and Joanna leave together. Tommy tells Arthur he has a business proposition for him, the biggest operation he has ever planned. Arthur says Tommy is speaking to the right man.

In the morning, Arthur is suffering from a hangover and says he spent the night in Mrs Johnson's guest bedroom but can't recall what happened after Ray left.

A delivery truck arrives at Arthur's lock-up with a large variety of equipment, including radios and computers, from Tommy.

Two police officers observing the funeral, Superintendent Copeland and D. S. Cody, come to see Morley and Park, who they spotted also watching the funeral. They tell them of their interest in two men who attended, Tommy Hambury, a first class criminal who has undergone plastic surgery, and a second man, Arthur Daley. Morley bursts into laughter and dismisses Arthur. Copeland says there is no mistake. Tommy and Arthur know each other very well and they had an interesting conversation at the wake. A third officer enters, Joanna, an undercover agent. They play Morley and Park a tape recording of them talking at the wake.

Dave informs Arthur about Tommy's criminal history and tells Arthur it isn't safe to talk about Tommy in public. Ray phones Arthur to tell him about another delivery. Arthur arrives at the lock-up. The delivery includes ladders, rope and electrical cables. Morley and Park take photos from across the street. Ray wants to know what Arthur has gotten them into. He can't remember so Ray gets him drunk to try to jog his memory, but to no avail.

Mrs Johnson invites Arthur and Ray to her home. Joanna arrives. Ray goes to greet her, unaware she is police. Mrs Johnson flirts with Arthur. Joanna gently probes Ray as to the reason he and Arthur are visiting Mrs Johnson. Park photographs Arthur leaving Mrs Johnson's as she kisses him goodbye.

At a police debriefing Joanna reports that Arthur is anxious to contact Tommy and is possibly courting Mrs Johnson, who is infatuated with Arthur. Morley can't believe it. Cody states Arthur is planning to take over Charlie Johnson's empire. Morley and Park reports on the latest delivery to Arthur's lock-up. Copeland places the lock-up under 24 hour surveillance and tells Joanna to make Ray her priority. Morley looks at a picture of the man with grey hair who he assumes is Tommy. Copeland tells them it isn't and shows Morley and Park a picture of Tommy. Copeland tells them the other man is Chief Superintendent Paul Slater who arrested Charlie Johnson years ago and attended the funeral for sentimental reasons.

At the Winchester, Ray tells Dave that Arthur is seeing a specialist about his memory. Ray asks Dave for help finding Tommy. Arthur is observed by Morley entering a doctor's office. Arthur tells the doctor he needs to remember what he did when he was drunk.

Joanna comes to see Ray at the lock-up. He is on the phone asking about Tommy. There is a knock at the door and Joanna goes to answer. Ray goes outside and there has been another delivery of some machines. Joanna talks Ray into letting her come with him. He tells her when they get there she has to wait in the car.

Later, Park follows Ray, who goes into a pub asking for Tommy. The locals act funny and the landlord says he can't help him. A man approaches, telling Ray he knows someone who can put Ray in touch with Tommy. Soon after, Ray has been attacked and stumbles and collapses on the street. Park and Joanna run to him. Joanna calmly tells Park to search Ray for keys to the lock-up to get copies cut, then Park should disappear and she'll take him to the hospital.

Later, Ray leaves the hospital, looking battered and bruised. Arthur tells him off for looking for Tommy.

Back at the lock-up, vehicles have been delivered. Copeland, Morley and Park are across the street waiting for Arthur and Ray to leave so they can enter the lock-up and check what is there.

Arthur visits another specialist about his memory. It doesn't go well.

Park and Cody are in the lock-up. Park checks Arthur's voice messages. There is one from Mrs Johnson and one from Tommy, telling him to keep the 15th free.

At the lock up, Ray tells Arthur there has been another delivery: a dozen police uniforms. At the Winchester, Mrs Johnson comes to see Arthur. She is very affectionate. She orders champagne. She asks Arthur to move in with her. He tells her he is already married and she is surprised. Arthur manages to talk his way out of it be telling Mrs Johnson he respects her too much. As she leaves she whispers that she will remember the night of Charlie's wake for the rest of her life. Tommy phones Arthur, arranging a meeting at Southend pier at midnight.

The police are informed Arthur received a call then he and Ray left. Copeland thinks Arthur will be meeting Tommy tonight.

Ray and Arthur drive to the meeting. Ray notices he is being tailed, by Joanna, but manages to lose her. They arrive at the pier. Arthur tells Ray to wait by the car. Arthur makes his way to the pier. Tommy is waiting. Ray finds a different way to approach them. Arthur confesses to Tommy that he can't remember the details of their plan. Tommy reveals Arthur was to drunk so they didn't discuss any details. He just wanted an agreement in principal. Tommy tells him this is going to be the biggest job ever pulled anywhere in the world. They will be living legends. Just as Tommy is about to reveal his plans he loses his footing and falls over the side of the pier into the sea. He doesn't resurface.

At Tommy's funeral, Arthur is trying to sell the stock Tommy sent him. Ray tells Arthur Mrs Johnson has invited them back to her house after the service. Arthur looks over to her and she smiles.
