In the lock-up Arthur buys some tapes, "101 Operatic Favourites for you to Accompany", from Fast Eddie. He plans to sell the opera tapes to executive-types in Hamstead. Ray isn't so certain. Marty Goldblum enters a pub and plays on a slot machine. He soon starts winning. Arthur talks Dave into selling some music tapes over the bar. Dave tells Arthur the Winchester has entered the 1992 Mega Knowledge Knockout Quiz, West London Section, to be held at the Winchester.

D. S. Morley is concerned about his savings. He angrily asks his partner, D. C. Field why they do the job. Can't be for the money. Field asks him what is wrong. Morley looks through a police file, suddenly gets excited and leaves his office, telling Field to follow.

At the Winchester, Dave is trying to put a quiz team together. Arthur declines. Dave mentions there is £1,500 prize money. Walter, a competitor from the Winning Post quiz team arrives to taunt Dave and Arthur, bragging about his team. Walter stirs Arthur into adding his and Ray's name to the Winchester team. Arthur tells Walter to leave.

Morley and Field are at an open prison being informed about Marty escaping. Marty visits Arthur's car lot, then the lock-up, and finds Ray unloading boxes. He introduces himself and says he is looking for Arthur. He did some work for him in the past. Ray invites him in.

Morley and Field leave the prison. Field says Marty is harmless. An angry Morley explains that he had money saved for a cottage in Whitby and a broker told him he knew how to invest it better and lost the money. It was Marty.

At the lock up Arthur informs Ray they are in the quiz. Arthur sees Marty and is delighted. He tells Ray that Marty's friends know him as "Brains".

At the police station Morley is interrogating someone about Marty. At the car lot Arthur is with a customer when Morley and Field interrupt, wanting to know if Arthur has heard from Marty Goldblum, who has escaped from prison. Marty used to mention Arthur. Arthur confirms he did know someone by that name in the past who did a financial deal for him that worked out well. Morley tells Arthur that Marty did a deal for him in 1989 and he is still trying to get back the £2,000. Morley wants Arthur to contact him if Marty gets in touch, and will be keeping an eye on him.

Arthur visits Ray's flat to tell Marty off for escaping from prison and getting Arthur involved. Marty says he couldn't stand another minute. Arthur says he has to go back and finish his sentence. Ray agrees. Marty subtly mentions he has been looking forward to the pub quiz. The following day Arthur's tune has changed and he feels Marty shouldn't give himself up before the quiz. He takes him to Ray's parents to stay, calling him Ferdinand, a Spanish business associate from Madrid, who doesn't speak any English. At the Winchester, Ray asks Arthur where Marty is and Arthur only mentions a safehouse. Ray and Dave wonder if it is worth doing all this to have Marty take part in the quiz.

Dave worries he will let everyone down. Ray is certain Morley knows they have a connection to Marty. Arthur lets it slip Marty is staying at Ray's parents. Dave says he is worried about the individual rounds in the quiz. That also worries Arthur.

At Ray's parents, Marty keeps up the pretence of being Spanish.

At the police station, Morley wonders why Arthur would risk himself for Marty. Arthur, Ray, Dave and Marty are at the library, discussing the quiz. Arthur lays out a plan for each of the categories for them to study. Their discussion is loud enough that they are eventually kicked out of the library. On the way out Arthur says he and Ray will go and scout the opposition.

Morley is obsessing over Arthur lying about Marty and wants Field to tail Arthur everywhere he goes until he leads them to Marty. Arthur and Ray are outside a pub spying on Walter and his quiz team. Ray tells Arthur he has a date, but Arthur tells him to cancel so he can study.

Arthur goes to the cinema to watch the newsreel about world events. Field is following in his car. The movie showing after is Silence of the Lambs. Arthur leaves the cinema later traumatised. At the Winchester, Arthur is still haunted by the film. He tells Dave he only stayed to wait for the pathe newsreel, but apparently they haven't run them for years. Field waits outside a health club for Arthur. Ray and Marty arrive in a van and sneak inside. Field calls Morley. Arthur, Dave, Ray and Marty are in a steam room. Morley joins Field and they race inside. They are forced to change into towels before they can enter. Marty is struggling in the steam. Arthur tells him to go into the pool next door, but it is ice water and Marty screams. Ray runs to help him. Ray and Marty spot Morley and Field.

They both jump into the pool and hide under the water. Through the steam Arthur and Dave spot Morley and Field. Morley wants to know where Marty is. Field notes Ray isn't there. Morley says they have escaped, but Ray returns on his own and sits down on a lounger. Field runs to look for Marty.

At the lock-up, Arthur watches TV about ancient Greece. Ray goes to his parent's to see Marty, who is going crazy. Ray tells Marty there is a cardboard box downstairs that Arthur insists he practise crouching inside, for cover to get to the quiz. At the Winchester, Ray is unloading some books from a van. Dave pops outside to tell him and Arthur that Marty has run off. They discuss trying to get the quiz cancelled then Arthur goes to find a new fourth man for the team.

Marty walks to the police station, but see Morley and flees. In the Winchester, Ray mentions to Dave he can't understand why Arthur is going overboard about the quiz. Dave tells him Arthur didn't want to do the quiz, but then Walter showed up and started staying things about Ray and his dad and Arthur took offense. At the lock-up, Marty returns and tells Arthur he can't cope and wants to go back to prison but he saw Morley and he panicked. Ray says Marty can't compete in the quiz in his state and they have to turn Marty in. Arthur agrees.

On quiz night Arthur unsuccessfully attempts to bribe the Quiz Master. At the police station Field tells Morley that Ray persuaded Marty to give himself up, but Morley missed it. Ray says he needs to leave but Morley insists he stay and give a full statement.

The time for the quiz is approaching. Dave and Arthur walk to the Winchester. A small crowd of people are entering and taking their seats. Morley keeps Ray at the police station, knowing he is missing the quiz. Arthur tries to delay the quiz, claiming his contact lens has fallen out. Field offers to give Ray a lift and mentions he used to do quizzes in the past. Ray asks him to be on the team. Arthur's stalling tactics annoys the other team to the point Walter tries to attack him. The quiz Master has to calm them down.

Ray and Field finally arrive.

The Winning Post leads the Winchester 60-58. Ray levels the scores. The final question is a piece of music which Arthur recognises but can't think of the name. Ray tells him to remember proposing to his wife and Arthur correctly guesses Serenade. The Winchester win. Arthur and Walter have words, then Arthur and Ray cheer as they walk home.
