Oddball curiosity from George Romero
1 September 2021
This one counts as a definite oddball curiosity from George Romero. It isn't a horror film but more a feminist drama with some minor horror elements. It is about a suburban housewife who is dissatisfied with her life. She experiences a series of strange dreams which illustrate her concerns and fears, while in reality she turns to witchcraft when a new neighbour introduces her to the ways of the occult.

This left-field drama has thankfully become more widely seen over the years. It didn't do good business on release and only re-emerged once Romero became a known name. Since the turn of the millennium it has become easily available via DVD and Blu-ray releases. This is a very good thing, as this small movie is a fascinating one. It showcases a different side of Romero and its early 70's suburban vibes are priceless - to me at least. In some ways, you could say that this is to witches, what Romero's later Martin was to vampires, in that it takes a supernatural idea and brings it into a realistic world where it is the protagonists belief in their otherworldy powers - as opposed to them actually possessing them - on which the crux of the story is based on.
