Shirley Temple cutes it up
8 September 2021
Elizabeth Blair (Shirley Temple) is one the girls living in Lakeside Orphanage. Her flamboyance and joyful play is not appreciated by the regimented staff. She is defended by her old sister Mary who stays there by working hard dark and night. Wealthy Edward Morgan is taken with them. He adopts Elizabeth but keeps it a secret from her so that she doesn't feel obligated to him.

The premise is weird and non-sensical. A cynical mind could twist its intended wholesomeness. The story doesn't have much in terms of drama. It has a few hit songs. More than anything, it has Shirley Temple and her relentless cuteness. Her unstoppable optimism is an antidote to the darkness during the heart of the Great Depression. It's not going to work the same way in a different modern world but her adorable charisma is undeniable.
