Review of Delhi Belly

Delhi Belly (2011)
10/10
One of the only good adult Bollywood films
17 September 2021
Let's go back 10 years in time. This film was about to get released. The song DK Bose just came out. And...there was outrage! How dare a film show adult scenes and have filthy language!? And it has a big name like Aamir Khan attached to it, someone we only knew for family entertainment. It was given terrible reviews for not being a family friendly film. It barely succeeded and isn't even available on Google Play Movies. Cut to today, everyone aspires to be this. It changed the mindset of Indians by being different from the crowd.

Delhi Belly is excellent in everything. Although I was a bit disgusted by the butt shots in the beginning, it slowly gained pace and then went all out. The music that we were so much grown into liking, it turns out all of that was only made for promotion. The actual film was simply a laughter riot with one entertaining shot after another. There wasn't one scene which felt cheesy, out of place or simply didn't make me laugh. The comic timing, the background score, the cinematography, the acting - everything was put together so well that it turned out to be the best film I have watched from 2011 (seriously, that year Bollywood was giving one dud after another).

I don't want to get too much into the spoilers of the story, since the impact of this film can only be truly felt if you know nothing about it. Just go in it blindly and experience one thing after another. The scenes from the songs really made me want to know the context, like when the goon is pulling Vir Das by his tie and making him choke in DK Bose, or when Imran Khan whacks a flowerpot on Rahul Singh's head in Sweety Sweety. And when those scenes actually came, I felt like the Leonardo DiCaprio meme where he's pointing at the screen.

It really amazes me how the Indian mindset is changing so quickly. In just ten years this film went from sparking controversies for its liberal storytelling in a conservative country to having a cult classic status all adult comedies aspire to achieve. Shows and films which are being targeted today for making fun of religion will also be looked back at with nostalgia, when the mindset will evolve further. I think this is the film that will be put forward as an example of Bollywood changing people's mindset for years to come.
