Just found this film and I liked the description, it seemed up my alley, but after watching it I am disappointed. "Big Stone Gap" has an impressive cast list for a small budget film but ultimately it's the storyline that doesn't work for me. I really didn't care for the second half of the film; I thought there was potential but few of the characters were very relatable, rational, or even likeable. The film lacked the verisimilitude to be a good drama and it was not charming or romantic enough to be a proper fairy tale, so it sort of flounders in between genres. I rate it a 4/10.
P. S. In my opinion for a good film set in Appalachia which includes romance, action, and social/environmental issues see "Fire Down Below" from 1997 with Steven Seagal. The ending is a little silly, becoming part fantasy in a way, but I still enjoyed it and rated it an 8/10.
