Heartwarming Gem - Coming of Age Film
27 October 2021
I love this film. It has both heart and soul. It is about growing up and how difficult that can be. It takes place in Spain at a Spanish high school with a teacher teaching the English language to his classes through Beatles's songs and lyrics. This is Franco's Spain and the population is living under oppression. The Beatles must have been a breath of fresh air. The teacher is a huge Beatles fan and when he learns John is in the south of Spain making a movie, sets off on a road trip to meet the great John Lennon. He has something pressing he needs to discuss with him and is certain he'll navigate an introduction. Along the way he picks up two teen hitch hikers. In 1966 hitching was commonplace and as a high school teacher, he has an easy way of helping the kids relax and trust him. They bond, they become friends and impart life lessons that will last a lifetime.

Apparently the film is based on real events, which makes it all the more poignant and dare I say, fun. This is a film that is beautifully realized, well acted by all and most especially by the lead, Javier Camara who plays the teacher. Sometimes films that take place in and celebrate the 1960s, are better than films actually made in the '60s. This is such a film.
