I guess the main positive for this episode is that finally we get to see some alien action (or not depending on how good your TV is). Whether it needed 5 episodes to get there of course is debatable but, unfortunately, the negatives far outweigh anything good.
Setting aside the poor lighting, the acting and writing in this was b-movie standard at best. Some of the decisions both the husband and wife make are just baffling and don't make sense: Why did she just abandon her children to start with and suddenly decide to go back? Why did he think dismantling a barricade on his own with an alien creeping around was a logical thing to do? Why did they keep telling each other to be quiet but continued to argue with one another loudly? I could go on....
Even the FX didn't look that great - part of that may be down to the darkness, but even the view out of the back of the van seemed a bit suspect.
I will continue to watch, just to see how it pans out, but there is the impending dread of a whole episode with just the school kids - and that could tip me over the edge.
