Having seen the series at least three times, this episode is probably the most poorly written and has the worst acting of any other episode in the entire series. Robert Hardy and Christopher Timothy just seem to be going through the motions at this point, although they are true professionals. The script appears to treat Arnie and Captain Crawford as though they are contemporaries, but the former actor was born in 1912 while the latter was born in 1944. Although it may say from the books by James Herriot, anyone who has read the books knows series 4-7 are just based on the characters.
