That clown's a menace
24 December 2021
"A Terrifying Round with a Menacing Metallic Clown" was one of my first 'What's New Scooby Doo' episodes, back then it was one of the standout episodes in a good way. Primarily for the villain. While having some fond memories of clowns at the yearly local carnivals as a kid, they are often portrayed as villains in film and television (i.e. Pennywise from 'IT'). The Scooby Doo franchise has had a few episodes over the years with villainous clowns.

Of which "A Terrifying Round with a Menacing Metallic Clown" is one of the best. The best is in my mind 'Scooby Doo Where are You's' "Bedlam at the Big Top", one of the best and creepiest (was as a child, still is) episodes of that show. This is not quite in that episode's class, but in its own way it is fairly close. It is a great episode and is even better now than it was as a child (have found this with a lot of the 'What's New Scooby Doo' episodes) and that takes some doing.

The animation is full of vibrant colour and meticulous attention to detail. Loved the inventive golf scenery and the animation on the clown is enough to make one feel uneasy. The music is still groovy without being at odds with the action, can't fault the theme song or the chase scene. "A Terrifying Round with a Menacing Metallic Clown" benefits from the golf setting and the golf was used well and was fun to watch. The clown really lives up to its menacing name, actually found it terrifying when younger. And that is from their look alone even.

It was very interesting seeing Shaggy and Velma role switching and it did work entertainingly and wasn't cheesy at all, when Velma in Shaggy's role could easily be forced. It did give us an opportunity though for us to see a different side to Shaggy and he and his struggles with fear were relatable. The humour is never less than very funny. Mystery is compelling, action packed and it does have spots where it does terrify like when the clown is introduced. The gang are on great form and the voice acting is great.

Will say though for me while the perpetrator was not expected the solution did feel rushed and didn't buy the trivial consequences.

Great episode and much better than the previous one. 9/10.
