We've had almost 9 seasons, and over 2 decades in the storyline, of a methodical, clinical, principled, highly intelligent serial killer.
Dexter evaded the Police, the FBI, multiple investigations, arrests, interrogations, and has always worked his way out of it.
And then suddenly - he just throws it all out of the window and kills an innocent cop in the middle of a police station? It was completely out of character.
The 'real' Dexter would have played it cool, carried on with exposing Kurt, and walked away. That would have been easier though if Angela didn't seem to have a personality transplant this episode too.
