Quickie: Surprisingly enjoyable despite being a basic Disney-fare.
1 March 2022
This was way more enjoyable than expected. Honestly with the trailers I thought this would be one of the worst Pixar movies, and while it's definitely low tier Pixar, despite its extreme simplicity and ironically shallowness, I was engaged throughout. Until that incredibly idealistic, and cliche ending, that I thought Pixar would be able to handle better. Seriously though that ending is so dumb and unrealistic it unironically made me drop my score by at least half a point. The movie has its fair share of issues too, like the underwater world being underdeveloped, the ability to turn into humans being unexplained, which makes the world not make much sense, using the Italian backdrop to just use stereotypes instead of exploring the actual culture, all the cliches, the fact that this concept has been so overused and not done that differently here. I really liked Soul, I thought it was great, but honestly both of these movies feel like they were written very quickly and with few drafts, feeling needlessly simplistic and having many of the same issues, with its very weak world building, contrivances, just some sloppy writing overall that would be cleaned up with rewrites I'd hope. Still though I kinda wish I could give this movie a higher rating because it was truly very enjoyable, and the 2 leads were quite well voice acted, and developed, making it easy to connect with. This movie doesn't overstay its welcome being one of the Shortest Pixar movies and I would recommend it to all families. My only worry is that this is the new direction Pixar is taking, making them almost unidentifiable next to the normal Disney family movies.

(6.5/10)

Note: This is a quick review I wrote last year that I always meant to expand on, especially since I plan to eventually review all Pixar films, but I thought I might as well post it regardless until I do.
