Review of Maaran

Maaran (2022)
5/10
A very cliched thriller
11 March 2022
What do most of the audience expect to watch from a director's latest outing, given that the director managed to impress them with his good narrative skills and great twists in his stories? Yes. Exactly that.

But what did he managed to offer in his new film Maaran? Absolutely Not That.

Maaran seemed like a convincing action thriller from its promo material. Infact even the director's decision to hire Suhas-Sharfu as the script writers seemed interesting, since he kinda did a not-so-good job in Mafia:Chapter 1. Yet, atleast he impressed us with Mafia: Chapter 1 for its brilliant twists (yes, that climax twist!).

Maaran was however, the most cliche you can get out of such investigate thrillers. The first half was actually pretty good, considering he brought some brought light hearted moments to elevate the siblings relationship. Even the interval block seemed fine, as it lifted up the thrill for me, which was the reason why I decided to watch this movie.

But, what you are served after the interval is the same dish you got in every other restaurant. It's sad to mention the word 'Routine' for a film I expected quite a lot of uniqueness in. Some of the twists were good while considering the story, yet we can feel them coming a mile away.

Coming to the cast, Dhanush has done his part pretty well. In simple words, it's a cakewalk role for him. I was really impressed by his acting skills at the interval block, coz he showcased the right emotions for that particular situation. The sister role done by Smruti Venkat was also portrayed really well, bringing some good moments in few scenes. Malavika Mohanan's role was a cliche investigation thriller role but was handled by her oretty satisfactorily. Others like Samuthirakani, Ramii etc. Have done justice to their role, though the roles offered nothing new.

To be honest, even the technical aspects were a 'clichè' from the music by G V Prakash Kumar to the script by the duo. Even the cinematography seems pretty dull, as if it seemed suitable for a commercial masala film, not this one.

Overall, the film's a routine fare. *Insert some more concluding sentences to complete the paragraph*
