St Trinian's 2: The Legend Of Fritton's Gold (2009) -

It hasn't quite got what the first one did. I think they appear to have cut out what actually made the predecessor so successful, which was most of the innuendo and sexuality.

This version is far more of a kids film and less enjoyable for the family as a whole and it doesn't seem to achieve that "St. Trinian's" vibe as it should. I could easily see the last one as a follow up to the originals from the 50's and 60's, but there are too many censors butting in to take the fun out of things now. It's like falling over one of those yellow 'Trip and Slip Hazard' signs whilst walking through an office building foyer, it defeats the object and that ultimately ruins the experience, as in this case.

It would also seem that they didn't spend a lot of thought on it anyway, or money.

They certainly didn't rehearse the flash mob scene very well and a lot of the cast are missing.

Rupert still does well and this is the type of part that he is best suited to in my opinion, but David Tenant is annoying, he may be the best 'Doctor Who' (2005-), but Jodie Whittaker kicks his @rse with her performance in this one. I really struggle with David since he became so famous, so many of his characters seem to be caricatures and far too over the top. I hesitate to say pantomimic, because I use the word so often, but it is definitely borderline with him (Oh Yes It Is!). Perhaps he would be better doing more cartoon voiceover work?

The storyline is similar to that of 'The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn' (2011), which works well as a cartoon, but doesn't really suit this situation for me, or maybe it's just the way that it is delivered.

It seems rushed and edited down to fit a targeted time, rather than carefully planned to provide the most entertainment. It could easily have been a fun treasure hunt, similar to Tintin's and in a style more like that of 'The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery' (1966), but they missed the point and I believe that is why the 3rd in the series was never made.

It's a shame, because the first did such a good job of setting it all up, but they didn't have the cahonies to follow it through. Maybe they will try again and get the formula right one day?
