"...everything always works out for the best."

Warning: Spoilers
I think a couple other reviewers for this episode might have missed the irony in the story. Carl Seabrook (Jeremy Slate) wasn't the great guy he considered himself to be when he offered to marry Edward Gibson's (Robert Webber) newly divorced, ex-wife. It would have saved Gibson a great deal of alimony down the road, but in thinking long term, he wound up short sighted. The twenty-five hundred dollar portrait of the ex-wife was nothing more than a bit of filler and diversion, and there was no reason to throw in the news of her death since it didn't really figure into what really happened with Carl and the money Ed paid him up front. I can see Carl at some point smooth talking his way out of marriage with his gal Marian, even before the honeymoon was over!
