Beasts (1976)

A couple of good ones

With only six episodes, the briefest anthology I've seen. I didn't find the most highly rated one - During Barty's Party - the most enjoyable. With only two characters stuck at home under siege from rats it felt a bit stagey.

My two favourites share the theme of low self esteem causing disruption at work. In Special Offer, plain and clumsy checkout girl Noreen (Pauline Quirke) endlessly irritates store manager Colin (Geoffrey Bateman), for whom she has unrequited love.

More complex, but also more overblown, is The Dummy, where alcoholic and rackety actor Clyde (Bernard Horsfall) plays a monster looking like a miniature Godzilla. He learns to his humiliation that his wife's lover, both better looking and a better actor than he, has been given a part in his film. Splendid performance from Thorley Walters as a solipsistic thespian who, amid the mounting mayhem of Clyde running amok, has thoughts only for when his own scene will be shot.
