"Second Thoughts" is a film I decided to see, based on it's TV trailer in 1983. I'd say it was interesting at best because really, it's not something that is 'super entertaining' but fairly interesting to watch as it does have a plausible story , if not an unusual one.
Remember, if you see it, this was filmed in 1982 and the ideals of the 1970s were still prevalent at that time. Lucie however, was recovering from the near failure of "The Jazz Singer" , which she co starred with singer Neil Diamond in 1980. (Both of these are not 'bad' films, they just did not do as well as hoped.)
Lawyer Amy (Lucie Arnaz) finds herself courted by two very different men. One who is her client, a roguish street musician & former 1960s activist named Will (played by Craig Wasson and who wears an Uncle Sam suit in his show) .
Also her ' ex ' , John Michael, an executive in banking. These three become a curious um..."love" ? Triangle after Amy gets pregnant by Will and both men vie for her affections. Her ex , may also just 'not' want Will to have her at all.
Will especially wants to stop her from getting an abortion. Now, at the time of this film's release, the Roe vs. Wade decision, was only 10 years in effect, having been passed in 1973, so the abortion discussion is not treated here like a "hot button' issue, because it had been a decade in effect and hearing it a movie wasn't as big a deal.
Although, it may have helped the film if it had been more hotly contested, because the two men want to save the baby, which is admirable but they also interfere with her right to decide what's right for her and what she can do with her own body. The question also, is , do either really love Amy? Or even love her enough to be a Dad to the baby?
Will, goes a little to far by abducting her from a doctor's office, where she was about to have the procedure done. Will is not much for law, as he is occasionally arrested for doing his street performances without a license.
He ends up keeping her in a secluded part of town and is determined she stay until the baby is born and then he can be it's father, despite her having dumped him earlier in the film.
Yes, that is the most crazy part of the film but (and it's been sometime since I've seen this) I believe Will and her ex end up in jail together over the whole matter and end up getting violent with each other.
The title "Second Thoughts" can mean, will Amy change her mind about keeping the baby or about either of these men?
Since I'm not revealing the ending (which I do remember) I'll let you find the movie and find out.
Going with a rating of 7, as while a pretty good movie, there are some things here that are a bit too outlandish and some scenes that really did nothing to help the story be more engrossing.
Some funny scenes but not really a comedy, more of a character study of 3 people in need of serious life direction.
Worth a look or two though. (END)
