Road movie with a pre Mamma Mia feeling in outback Australia...strewth!
6 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Yet another Australian film. Not your stereotypical Australian outback film even though the ending at Alice Springs is in deep Northern Territory.

The film follows two drag queens (Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving) and a transexual character Bernadette (Terence Stamp). Now when I think of Stamp in particular I think of his roles in films such as Superman II (1980) as General Zod.

Now think of a multicolour road movie through Australia from Sydney to a transvestite show at a casino in Alice Springs on board a dilapidated bus nicknamed Priscilla and you are part of the way to getting this film.

Mixed amongst this is a soundtrack including pre Mamma Mia (2008) ABBA songs and Oscar worthy costume design.

Now as viewers of outback based Australian films are all to aware. Some of the population are hard drinking call a spade a spade knuckleheads. So the drag queens are likely to face some "resistance" to their way of life which adds to a black comedy ambience to the film, the main intention? I'm not sure but I found Stephan Elliott's film a joy.

I like road movies, Australian outback location and the black comedy of the film.
