Everything in life is luck
6 August 2022
In Skydance Animations' first feature-length film Luck. We follow the story of Sam Greenfield(Eva Noblezada). An 18-year-old whose whole life has been riddled with bad luck and misfortune. When Sam ages out of foster care and has to go out on her own. Sam begins to worry about her future as well as a young girl Hazel who also has the worst of luck. However, all that changes when Sam one day comes across a lucky penny and in turn meets a talking cat named Bob(Simon Pegg). Leading her to the land of Luck. Where Good & Bad Luck exists and results in hijinks. So Luck was an Anticipated film many were looking forward to. With the return of John Lasseter as the Head of Animation, many were hoping for a return to that old Pixar style that has since faded in recent years. In many ways, Luck is a step in the right direction, While its animation's good, especially for a much smaller studio, and the voice acting is good. It falls flat in its plot and world establishment. It characters are basic yet likable Sam herself is very optimistic and she does have a good heart. Although a major issue with her is you don't really know much about her outside of leaving the orphanage. The relationship between her and Bob is your typical friendship, they have no chemistry yet over time they take a liking to the other. It's not heartwarming, but it's not completely lazy either. I did find them both enjoyable duo. The story itself is entertaining albeit basic. In the world of luck itself, I like the design and some of the ideas are interesting, but why these creatures make luck for humans is never explained. I assume of course to make their world function, but you're just not given any perspective on how they thrive. Despite these ideas, you don't really spend enough time on either the good or bad luck to really see the full function of this world. There does seem to be a sense of a lack of awe magic, not in the sense like Onward where the magic's pretty much dead the majority of the film. You got Leprechauns, Dragons, and Goblins, and how the luck is formed and sent out. It kinda feels like monster Inc. Where It's played more straightforward to our world with how it's structured with a very corporate built. The humor is more or less what you expect slapstick and mishap some of which are creative about what could possibly happen. Overall it has fun movie and while it doesn't push it to the extreme with the fantasy elements like I was hoping for it is still a fun movie with some good design and nice characters and I'm looking forward to the studio's next project.
