Doesn't hold up as much 35 years later
14 August 2022
Don't get me wrong, this movie was a 8 or 9 in my first experience seeing this film. When I was a teenager I would quote lines from the film and compared to some of my favorites, like Goodfellas, Godfather 1 & 2, Apocalypse Now, Chinatown, Pulp Fiction, Sunset Blvd and The Searchers. I particularly liked this film into my late teens and twenties but it's been probably 20 years since I sat and watched the whole movie through to the end. Somehow the film's meaning doesn't enrapture me that same at 48 years old that it did as teen. Great acting from most, the Drill Sergeant is how I have pictured them all my life. He says in real life, the Drill Sergeant would never physically touch the recruits but his performance was one of the greatest characters in film. It's still a great film and I guess I'll watch Platoon & Apocalypse Now again soon. I've been on a military kick my whole life and modern military history is fascinating to me. My grandfather was a radio/gunner on SBD Dauntless in the Pacific Theatre and he is now the Chairman of the Board of the National WW2 Museum. He was a history major at UT and my dad was also a History major at Rice and all the men in my family served at one time or another. I never joined up but kind of wish I had but not sure I would have made it, as discipline is very challenging to me!
