Making the Cut (2020– )

Needs work but has improved over the seasons

Warning: Spoilers
I am writing this review after watching all 2 seasons back to back! I know. I was hoping that the show would get better after the first season. It doesn't!

Let's begin with the first season. I think there's too much emphasis on Heidi and Tim, especially Heidi. She is so cringe. There are bits where they show Heidi and Tim doing activities around the city, but it didn't add anything to the show. I think a better idea would be to show them going around and showing important stores or places that have inspired fashion around the city.

On that note, I don't think it was fair to have designers come to New York and not do anything there, just to make them fly to Paris. Some of the designers were European, and could have really saved some time. Also, flying from US to France to Japan, then home, then back to the US is really a waste of time, and I could see the designers were tired and jet lagged.

Now, when it comes to all seasons... the format is ridiculous.

The designers should be able to communicate with the seamstresses directly. I thought it was really unfair for those who are not native English speakers. To have to come back and see that your garment is not done... it's just added non sense that they should not be dealing with. Plus, I want to see more of the designers and their creations! I wish I could see more of the designers than the judges.

The runway is god-awful. I could barely see the details of the garments. The comments by the judges are not really that helpful. In some cases, they're even rude and mean girl comments. The music is horrid! The runways were too distracting in some of the episodes and took away from the garments.

FInally, the elimination format is nonsensical. I would prefer that they talk to and give critical feedback to each designer. If that doesn't work, then at least talk to the top and the bottom three. And let them know where they stand!

Don't do the whole "did you change your mind?" It is soooo tacky! For the most part, they've already made the decision, but they want to make the designer beg. Let them have their integrity. It is so insulting.

Lastly, the finales in last two seasons are awful. I do not agree with any of the winners. Those who are extremely creative and the FUTURE of fashion should NOT be in this show. They're not looking for the next glonal brand. They're looking for the next Zara or H&M retail designers. This is a huge BJ to Amazon and a big FU to fashion designers. They don't want creativity. If a good design does win, then they cheap-ify and sell a gross polyester version of it on Amazon. Personally, I wouldn't want that as a designer.

Edit: I am watching the third season, and I just watched Jeremy Scott's tatrum. It was abusive, and really made me sad for these designers. They have done one day challenges back to back to save production costs, but the designers are treated badly because they are exhausted! They have spent so much money in the past on travel, but they can't give at least 2 days to the designers. Jeremy Scott yelled and threw a book while Yannick had to stand there and take it. Tim Gunn looked shaken up, but Heidi did nothign to stop this. Then he has the audacity to say that he did it out of frustration because they care about them. This is disgusting and abusive behaviour.

Edit 2: I am happy with Season 3 finale! I think they finally gave an opportunity to the right designer. He is amazing, and so creative! I wish I could see how his brain works. Giving extra star for this.
