Kung Fu Panda (2008)
8/10
Just As Good As I Remember, Even With Issues With The Pacing And Writing
27 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Pros: 1. There are fantastic and memorable voice performances all around, with Jack Black (Po), Dustin Hoffman (Shifu), Ian McShane (Tai Lung) and Randall Duk Kim (Oogway).

2. The score, which incorporates beautiful traditional Chinese music to add a layer of authenticity, also adds tension and wonder when appropriate.

3. The martial arts scenes are fast-paced and sizzling with energy. It is impressive for 2000's animation.

4. The cinematography is gorgeous, and it delivers some stunning shots, particularly those involving the natural elements and scenery.

5. The sound design is crisp, in addition to adding so much texture and depth to the goings-on.

6. The animation is imbued with rich colour and brings so much life and emotion to the film.

7. Tai Lung has to be one of the most complex and compelling villains in animated movies. He's inundated, from an early age, with expectation, promises and praise from Shifu, only to see them undermined and broken. Even during the boss fight between Tai Lung and Shifu, Tai Lung still seeks the latter's approval. It makes him oddly relatable to a lot of people.

Cons: 1. Oogway's death is a little nonsensical in how it occurs, it's also heavily cheesy. This cheapens the death.

2. The pacing in regards to Po's martial arts training is incredibly rushed. This makes his becoming of the Dragon Warrior, as well as the subsequent acquisition of the Dragon Scroll, feel rather hollow and unearned.
