Vengeance (II) (2022)
8/10
Surprisingly funny, surprisingly good, surprisingly surprising

-"This is the most wretched, godforsaken stretch of land on the face of the earth. And I'd never leave. You know what I mean?" -"Yeah. That's how I feel about Twitter."

I went into this movie not expecting a whole lot, though I liked the trailer, but I was really impressed. It did a few things that most movies don't accomplish: it made me think, it made me laugh, and it went in an unexpected direction.

B. J. Novak wrote this, and it shows he's not just a funny actor, but he's funny himself. I haven't done enough research to know whether it's fair to call this an independent film, but while it presents as an independent film, it's much funnier than they ever turn out to be. It's actually *funny*. What I really liked was that the movie continued to maintain humor throughout, minus a few climactic scenes towards the end, and was genuinely funny rather than just "offbeat". It reminded me of the humor you see in more mainstream comedies, or even good sitcoms.

-"MS-13? La Linea?" -"Yeah, I'm familiar with La Linea. They actually murdered 41 journalists last year." -"They've done bad things, too."

I think it's important to see it through to the end before you can fully appreciate its themes and messages, which I don't think it ever prioritized over making an entertaining movie. And while I can see how southerners might find it offensive, I think it shows that the condescending characters were the really the worst ones, and that they were full of hot air. I actually found this movie to be thought provoking, but without trying too hard.
