As many mentioned before me, you can see how this was influential to films like Final Destination, It Follows or even recently Smile.
I didn't find it scary, but honestly old horror films don't scary me anymore. I know this is a take that would get me cancelled on Twitter (if I had any followers), but it's the truth. I watch a lot of old movies, but even if fear is part of our basic survival instincts, we develop mechanisms and what scared us 40 years ago doesn't have the same effect today (at least on a screen). That's why jump scares from the 80s seem so cheap and even this week a lot of jump scares worked for me watching Smile.
Nevertheless, great atmosphere, tense, the score always on point too and the acting is not too bad. The script is not always perfect - and I don't get why "this thing" was so selective with people closer to her until the very end... - but this film works.
