Bob's Finest Hour
2 October 2022
This fascinating documentary film about the waves of cause-and-effect that a relatively small solidarity action from Scottish Rolls Royce workers had on the atrocities of the Pinochet regime in Argentina. The central figure here for me is Bob Fulton, a staunchly moralistic union man and a sweetly humble Raymond Briggs protagonist come to life. The core "narrative" of the documentary is somewhat winding and is assisted by some awkwardly mawkish animated sequences but the choice of talking heads is restricted to those directly involved and I was pleased at how Felipe Bustos Sierra resisted the urge to stand in the spotlight and make it a "my mission" film. Instead it is those humble workers, particularly Bob, who are given centre stage. It's a piece of history we don't assess enough, but a strongly humanising reminder that a single thoughtful act can have just as much impact as a single violent one.
