The Stranger (II) (2022)
7/10
Deceived by a Sting
21 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As the film acknowledges, this is based on a true story. The name of the victim and the perpetrator have been changed. And the focus of the story is not how the crime was committed but on the rather elaborate sting operation to lure the killer and induce him to confess to the abduction and murder of the boy.

In this scenario, the relationship between an undercover agent of the West Australian police and the killer is explored. That it took the police quite a long time to establish the identity of the killer should attest to the painstaking process that the police underwent to ensure that they are building an air-tight case against him.

Edgerton and Harris play their parts well. Harris, in particular, is believable in portraying his full confidence in what Edgerton's character (Mark) is doing to convince him that he's in good hands. This is the meat of the story.

How events unfold in the story is rather slow. The viewer has to be patient and not dismiss the film as uneventful.
